Bill Toma is a self-taught sculptor
who is known for his dedication to the exceptional quality
we see in his art. His fascination with the sensual beauty
of the female form is evident in his Harlequin and Nude
Series, a collection of exquisitely beautiful and intricately
detailed sculptures. Toma’s literary background has
a great influence in his work. Not only does it inspire
themes and subjects of his sculpture, it also manifests
in the symbolism in his work. “The Gift of Love”
is a perfect example of such literary influence, as is the
poetic essence in the “Queen of Hearts,” inspired
by a poem Toma wrote celebrating the Queen of Hearts control
of love’s fate with her toss of the hearts’
spin. Toma has been very fortunate in having access to excellent
models for his work, including Karen McDougal, 1998 Playmate
of the year, who modeled for “Warrior Princess.”
